Half the results are adverts, the other half are lists of benefits that are not allowed to be printed on a package.

Let us take it differently: what is known, what is regulated, and where the decision is not ours but a doctor’s.

First, the honest part

DHA-Core is formulated for adults. It is not a product for children and we do not recommend it for them. This article is not trying to sell you anything for your child; we write it because the question comes up often and deserves an answer that does not try to profit from it.

Why DHA is discussed for children

DHA is a structural component of the body, present in high concentrations in the brain and the retina. For that reason it has been studied extensively in pregnancy, breastfeeding and early childhood, periods when these tissues develop rapidly.

In the European Union there are specific authorised claims for this area. One concerns maternal DHA intake and the normal development of the brain and eyes in the foetus and breastfed infant, another concerns DHA intake in infants and the normal development of vision. They are narrow claims, with precise intake conditions, and they do not automatically translate into “so give them a supplement”.

For older children, the general claims remain the three valid for the whole population: DHA and normal brain function, DHA and normal vision, EPA plus DHA and the normal function of the heart, all from an intake of 250 mg a day.

What is not authorised, and what you will nonetheless see in advertising: that it improves school results, focus or behaviour, or that it helps with ADHD. These are not permitted claims in the EU.

From what age, and at what dose

Here the correct answer is the boring one: it depends on the age and the child, and the dose should be set with a paediatrician.

The reasons are concrete. Needs differ greatly between a 3-year-old and a 13-year-old. A child who eats oily fish twice a week is in a completely different situation from one who eats none. And, very practically, softgels for adults are not a suitable format for small children, who risk choking.

What you can do before the appointment, to make the conversation useful: note how much fish the child actually eats in a normal week, and what other supplements they already take. Many children’s multivitamins also contain Omega-3, and the doses add up.

Food first

The basic recommendation, ahead of any supplement, remains diet. Good sources of EPA and DHA are oily fish: salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring. For children, mercury content is also taken into account, which is why small, short-lived fish such as sardines are usually preferable to large predatory ones.

A common confusion: flaxseed, chia and walnuts contain ALA, not EPA and DHA. The body converts ALA into DHA very inefficiently, so they are not a substitute.

Why taste matters more than you think

A supplement only works if it is taken consistently, and with children the main reason for giving up is not the price, but the taste and the smell. Fish oil has both, and fishy burps are exactly the kind of detail that ends the conversation after three days.

Hence the interest in fish-free sources, such as microalgae oil, and in liquid or flavoured formats aimed at children. It is a question of adherence, not of composition, but everything else depends on adherence.

When to ask a doctor, not the internet

Before starting any Omega-3 supplement in a child.

If they already take a multivitamin or another supplement, so the doses do not overlap.

If they have a known condition or an ongoing treatment, especially one affecting coagulation.

If they are allergic to fish or seafood.

Before scheduled surgery.

This is not a polite formula. Doses in children are set by weight and age, and that is not done from an article.

The information in this article is general and does not constitute medical advice. DHA-Core is a supplement formulated for adults. For children, the dose and the format should be set with a paediatrician.

From what age, at what doses, and why a form with no fishy taste changes adherence completely.
